big part of that is tradition. also in the first part of the 20th century, bunting happened about 1/3 of all at bats. The dirt base paths, brought an element of artistry and skill in getting down the right kind of bunt in the right area. 2ndly, it is an issue of groundskeeping....especially with amateur leagues, that can't pay someone a full time salary to tend to their HS or Little league field which might see 2-4 games on weekdays plus practices, and up to 10 games on weekends.... you would have huge bare spots and cow paths... by their Daddy's teams.... Two sons of former Pirates managers -- and both of the sons have current local ties -- were drafted by the teams their fathers currently manage. The first local high school player off the board was Patrick Leyland, a catcher from Bishop Canevin High School who is the son of Detroit Tigers -- and former Pirates -- manager -- Jim Leyland. The younger Leyland went to, coincidentally, the Tigers in the eight round. It could make for an interesting choice for Patrick Leyland, as he has accepted a scholarship to Maryland, but his father has expressed recently to Detroit media members that he'd like his son to get into professional baseball sooner rather than later. In the 22nd round, Duquesne senior utility player Mark Tracy was taken by the Colorado Rockies -- the team his father Jim, a former Pirates manager, currently manages. guy went off in the junior college championships...
http://bleacherreport.com/articles/396547-the-bryce-harper-legend-grows
His team facing elimination in the Junior College West Regionals, Bryce Harper went 6 for 6 with four home runs, a triple, a double, and 10 RBI in a game this weekend.
His team won by a final score of 25-11 (there was a stiff wind blowing out in Lamar, Colorado where the game was played) to propel his team, College of Southern Nevada, to the Junior College World Series in Grand Junction, Colorado. He had hit for the cycle in a game a day or two before.

When Mike Leake takes the Bump this afternoon in Cincinnati, we will be making his first regular season pitch at any professional level. the 9th pick overall in the first round of last year's draft. Leake will be the first pitcher since Darren Dreifort for the Dodgers to completely skip the minor leagues and start in the big show. Xavier Nady was the last position player to go straight from amateur ball to the big leagues. Leake, is a small right handed pitcher (I've seen listed heights range from 5'11 to 6'1) He throws a fastball that sits mostly... More...

When
Mike Leake takes the Bump this afternoon in Cincinnati, we will be
making his first regular season pitch at any professional level. the 9th pick overall in the first round of last year's draft. Leake
will be the first pitcher since Darren Dreifort for the Dodgers to
completely skip the minor leagues and start in the big show. Xavier
Nady was the last position player to go straight from amateur ball to
the big leagues. Leake, is a small right handed pitcher (I've seen listed heights range
from 5'11 to 6'1) He throws a fastball that sits mostly at 91 but can
touch mid 90's. You gotta figure he is going to be throwing a bit
harder with the adrenaline of his pro debut today. he also throws a slider, curve, and change. the change being the closet
to a plus pitch. His best attribute seems to be his command. This is
somthing that he might lose with the adrenaline and nerves in this
game. Last year as a junior at Arizona st, the righty went 16-1 1.71 ERA and
tiny .84 WHIP in 141 innings punching out 162 batters and only giving
up 4 aluminum bat homeruns.... so he must keep the ball down. Leake did pitch 19 innings 6 games in the arizona fall league. Giving
up 20 hits, 3 earned runs, striking out 15 while walking just 3. Leake will be facing Tom Gorzelanny from the Cubs, aquired last year
from their minor league squad...ahem... traded from the Pittsburgh
Pirates. The left-handed, illinois native, has had 2 rough years after
his 2007 break through with the Buccos where he went 14-10 with a 3.88
ERA over 201 innings. The over might be the play here today.... you never know how these never before seen rookies fare. But the cubs at + money (+108 at matchy) seems like a decent play.

don't buy into the hype or what I say or what another group of posters say. Look at the #'s how does Kentucky do away from their home court with their great fans? yeah, they travel well, but this game is in Cornell's backyard and just about anyone that has tickets for this and ISN'T a true blue fan...will be backing Cornell big time.... so how did the numbers look when Kentucky left their hallowed grounds and played a team with similar ratings to cornell... (note that only 3 of these 10 games included a team with a better... More...
